Whats the story with registration?

Registration will take place at 2 Wheels Bike Shop in Sandymount Green from Thurrsday 23rd of August. You MUST have your bike safety checked at 2Wheels and your bike will be tagged and deemed safe for the event. You MUST have an official tag on your bike when you drop your bike off at Sandymount Transition area on the Saturday morning of the event. No tag...no race!

The registration at 2 Wheels will be open late on Friday night and will open early on Saturday morning but will close at 8am SHARP

You will be given your wave time, waves will be close together so we will have 2 safety briefings, one for sport and one for expert.

At registration you will also pick up your race number at 2 Wheels.  Any maps and control cards you will need for the race will be given out  just before the safety brief which will take place at 8.45am at Sandymount Green

ADRENALINE HUNT competitors will start at the later time of 11am with a safety brief at 10.30.

We will write two information emails to all competitors with details in the weeks before the race, so all the information you will need will be in those.

You can register with a Laser card on the Run Ireland site: REGISTER WITH A LASER CARD

Team race? Do I do everything or is it a relay with my team mates?

You do everything!!! You will move as a team and all team members are required to do all challenges. Those who do not do a challenge will receive a time penalty for the team. You won't be forced into doing anything but if you pike out on any challenge your team will be penalised! Your entry fee includes all events including the abseil. The day will be action packed! Fun and action is just as important as athleticism! All levels of fitness have a chance here as your brain will be exercised as much as your body!

We now have a solo category!

What bike can I use?

Entirely up to you. As it is urban, a large proportion of the cycling will occur on cycle paths. You will have some canal path cycling that may or may not be paved and you will also have to negotiate some hard packed sand on a beach section. You reckon you can handle your road bike on the beach? Do you reckon the mountain bike will slow you down on the streets? Would a hybrid perform better? All these are questions you must answer yourself. have a look at the route and decide. All of those bikes are adaquete for DARE, it just depends how efficient you think they will be over the course.

Do I need to have trained in abseiling to be able to do the Aviva abseil?

No. You will be looked after by experts. Work At Height will be looking after the abseil for you and will give you enough training on the spot to get you down safely.

I have never kayaked before?

Its ok. We will be supplying sit on top kayaks for the event. you need never have kayaked before, they are very hard to capsize. We recommend you do a bit of training before the race though! Expert Kayak will be around 2k with Sport around 1 to 1.5k on river.

I cant swim though.

Don't worry. You will be supervised throughout the watersports and will be given a bouyancy aid for all water based activity. The relay option on some of the watersports and challenges section will allow you to opt out and pass it on to a team member if you don't want to get into the water. You can do the land bit instead!

Can I compete in pairs and as a three?

Yes, but they will be separate categories. There will be prizes given for each category. We will give prizes for the fastest all male team and all female team and the fastest mixed teams. We encourage mums/dads and daughters/sons to compete together. It is the perfect race to do with friends/relations or whatever combination you choose!

Do I have to do the abseil? I am petrified of heights.

The abseil is not mandatory but the staff who are in charge of the abseil are highly qualified and professional with an impeccable safety record. How cold you pass up the opportunity to abseil off the stadium???? But we understand if you really can't!

What's happening at the start?

The Race HQ will be at Sandymount Green.  You will sign on here and leave your bags to collect at the finish.

Will you be closing the roads off?

No. Part of the race is interacting with the public. It's about racing the city streets as they are. The vast majority of the bike course will use the Dublin City Cycle Lane Network. The rules of the road will apply. Running red lights, going down one way streets the wrong way, barging pedestrians etc all carry heavy time penalties and we will have plenty of marshals on the course checking for this. Play nice!!

What will we be asked do do at control points?

Some control points will be simply dibbing in. You will also be asked to record your arrival at some checkpoints by taking a picture, that we will verify on your arrival at the finish. Others will be a whole lot more! You might be asked to do a wide range of tasks. We will be trying to keep this secret however, so you will have a surprise on the day. Our goal with these task based checkpoints is to have you doing something unique in Dublin....stuff that you could never do normally. Don't worry, it won't be anything we wouldn't do ourselves......trust us!

Can I hire a bike?

Yes, we will have the facility for you to hire a bike for the day. Just contact 2 Wheels Bike Shop in Sandymount

Do I need to know how to navigate?

No more than reading a street map, you will be given street maps with the control points on them. It's no worse than being a city tourist! You will need to follow a specific course on the bike section where there will be control points, where you must dib in. On the Street Orienteering section there will be a number of controls in no specific order which you must visit. The direction you take is up to you. You will be given your map and away you go!  We will allow you, and encourage you to use your GPS or mobile phone for navigation.

I have never participated in an adventure race before. I don't think I am fit enough and this will be too hard. Will it?

The beauty of this race is that it is up to you how much you want to do. You will be given a ranking no matter what. It is a perfect springboard into getting involved in the outdoors and fitness as you will participate in over 5 sports in one day, in one race! there is no pressure to perform, and our aim is to provide a relaxed atmosphere so you can try your best.

We will update this FAQ page with new questions as we receive them!
